  • Ghosts

Catrina and her family are moving to the coast of Northern California because her little sister, Maya, is sick. Cat isn’t happy about leaving her friends for Bahía de la Luna, but Maya has cystic fibrosis and will benefit from the cool, salty air that blows in from the sea. As the girls explore their new home, a neighbor lets them in on a secret: There are ghosts in Bahía de la Luna. Maya is determined to meet one, but Cat wants nothing to do with them. As the time of year when ghosts reunite with their loved ones approaches, Cat must figure out how to put aside her fears for her sister’s sake — and her own.

Raina Telgemeier has masterfully created a moving and insightful story about the power of family and friendship, and how it gives us the courage to do what we never thought possible.

    Ghosts, September 13, 2016

This review is from: Ghosts (Paperback)
My oldest daughter is nine years old, and she loves reading. She has started reading novels, but her favorite genre has always been graphic novels. Raina Telgemeier has always been my daughter’s favorite author; she has all of Telgemeier’s books, and even met her a few years ago. Needless to say, my daughter has been looking forward to Ghosts for months.

Ghosts is Telgemeier’s newest graphic novel. Teenage protagonist Cat is not very happy about having to move to the small town of Bahia de la Luna, but her little sister Maya has cystic fibrosis and the climate will help her breathe better. Cat learns that the whole town is really into Dia de los Muertos; she thinks this is silly, but Maya really wants to meet a real ghost.

There is a boy in the story, Cat’s friends tease her about Carlos liking her, but the focus is not on a romantic relationship. Instead, there is an emphasis on friendship; Carlos shows Cat and Maya around the town, and he is the first one to tell them about the ghosts who live near the mission.

It looks like this book might be categorized as “scary”, but it’s more poignant than anything else. Maya has some health scares, and she is preoccupied with her own mortality; that’s why she wants to meet a ghost. That’s not something that Cat wants to think about, but she also worries about Maya. I also appreciated that the girls try to connect with their Mexican heritage.

Ghosts is a wonderful book. I would recommend this book to just about anyone. My daughter devoured this book in a matter of hours. I read it as well, and I’m always so impressed with what Telgemeier can do without using prose. This is a masterfully crafted book- it’s about family and friendship… and of course, ghosts. You’ll have to read the book if you want to find out if Ghost are real. My daughter and I have read all of Telgemeier’s books, and we agree that this is her best one yet!

This review is from: Ghosts (Paperback)
Cat’s little sister Maya has Cystic Fibrosis and everyone hopes that the climate in Bahía de la Luna will help her breathing. Cat is sad to leave her friends behind and she isn’t sure what to expect when everyone in town starts talking about ghosts. With the Day of the Dead approaching, all of Bahía de la Luna is preparing to welcome the town’s otherworldly guests.

Cat is afraid of the ghosts while Maya is determined to meet one. Their search for new friends, ghostly and otherwise, will bring Cat and Maya closer together. It will also introduce them to the wonders to be found in their new town–especially when it comes to el dia de los muertos in Ghosts (2016) by Raina Telgemeier.

At this point in her career, Raina Telgemeier hardly needs an introduction. Her latest standalone graphic novel is another charming production. The detailed artwork and semi-fantastical plot demonstrate that Telgemeier is at the top of her game as an author and illustrator.

Stunning artwork brings Bahía de la Luna to life complete with intricate Day of the Dead spreads highlighting various aspects of this cultural phenomenon. A heartwarming story (with a diverse case of characters!) combines well with Telgemeier’s signature artwork to create a satisfying read. Add this one to your to read list now. Ghosts is going to be big.

My 8 year old granddaughter loves this book. It arrived while she was at school. She started reading it after she completed her homework and didn’t put it down until bedtime. She is already asking if there are more like this.
